We Want to Hear From You
NetLift is built for students, so it should be shaped by students too. We want to hear your honest thoughts - what's working, what's missing, and what would actually make networking easier for you. There are no wrong answers and no one to impress.
We've partnered with CognateUK to run this survey, and every single response goes straight into what we build next. It takes about two minutes - and it genuinely makes a difference.

Welcome to NetLift
Most students are told networking is the most important skill they can develop for their career. Then handed absolutely nothing to work with. No events built for them. No guidance on where to start. No access to professionals. No bridge between education and the industry they want to work in.
NetLift exists because of that gap.
We are a free student networking platform - built by a 19-year-old Business and Marketing student who got tired of waiting for someone else to fix the problem. Everything on this platform is designed for sixth form and university students who want to start building real professional connections before they graduate, before they need them, and before it feels too late.
Here is what you will find here:
Everything is free or as close to free as we can make it. In-person events have a small ticket price to cover costs.
Everything we build starts with what students actually need - not what sounds good in a brochure.
No theory. No vague advice. Just tools students can use immediately.
Serving sixth form and university students across the whole of the UK - online and in-person.
Core resources are always free. In-person events are priced at cost.
Top Tips
My very first networking event was a long time ago now — a music industry event — and all I knew you're meant to do was 'work the room'. So that's what I did, I just tried to talk to as many people as possible!
It turns out it's not that bad an approach. People worry terribly about networking but if you reframe it as an opportunity to learn and build relationships, rather than something purely transactional where you absolutely have to come away with something there and then, that really helps. Show curiosity in the subject matter and the people you meet, and that helps take the pressure off.

His 6 top tips on how to prepare for a networking event
1. Identify the challenges you've encountered. Think about difficult situations you have faced professionally and how you solved them. Your experience could be the answer someone else desperately needs.
2. Prepare questions about challenges you're currently facing. Don't be afraid to say, "This is what I'm currently struggling with. Has anyone experienced something similar?" The right conversation could save you months of trial and error.
3. Know what you want to learn. Networking becomes more productive when you have specific areas where you need insight, guidance or perspective.
4. Be prepared to share value. Your knowledge, experience, introduction, idea or even a simple piece of advice could become valuable to someone else.
5. Listen more than you speak. People often remember those who genuinely listened to them more than those who spent the entire conversation talking about themselves.
6. Follow up after the event. The event may last two hours, but the relationship can last for years. Send a thoughtful message, continue the conversation and look for ways to remain useful.
And his final thoughts
Most importantly, remember this: Networking is a give-and-take relationship. Someone may inspire you today. Someone may open a door for you tomorrow. But somewhere along the way, you should become the person opening a door for someone else. Your network can influence your net worth, but only when you invest in it intentionally. Don't just build a contact list. Build relationships. Because sometimes, the person sitting beside you at a networking event today may become the person who changes the trajectory of your professional life tomorrow.
Marketing Manager & News Editor at Cambridge Network
Read a Cambridge Network marketing professional's top tip on building genuine professional relationships.
Don't think of networking as collecting contacts; think of it as building relationships. Be curious about people, ask questions, listen properly and look for ways you can be helpful too.
Some of the most valuable professional relationships I've built have come from conversations where there was no immediate "benefit" or agenda — you never know where a genuine connection might lead.
I think a lot of people, especially when they're starting out, feel like they need to be confident, impressive or have something clever to say when networking. You really don't. Just be your authentic self, be interested in the person you're talking to and don't be afraid to say, "I don't know much about that, tell me more." You'll have much better conversations when you stop worrying about making an impression and focus on making a connection.

Degree Apprentice at HSBC
Read an HSBC degree apprentice's top tip on building genuine relationships instead of overcorporatising them.
Build genuine relationships, don't overcorporatise them. Be a real person in the conversation, not a version of yourself performing for a contact. Try to avoid going into conversations with an ask already in mind, build the relationship first, and let value flow both ways rather than trying to take from people. The best connections happen when neither person is angling for anything.
Founder at NetLift Network
Read NetLift's founders top 6 professional tips on how to maximise your results after a networking event
What you do after a networking event is just as important as the event itself - if not more important.
1. Follow Up While You're Still Fresh in Their Mind. Reach out within 24 hours and reference something specific from your conversation to make your follow-up personal and memorable.
2. Don't Just Add Them - Give Them a Reason to Remember You. Go beyond sending a LinkedIn request by continuing the conversation or sharing something genuinely relevant to them.
3. Turn Conversations Into Actions. If someone gives you advice, mentions an opportunity or offers an introduction, act on it and let them know you followed through.
4. Find a Way to Add Value First. Before asking what someone can do for you, think about how you can provide genuine value to them.
5. Keep the Relationship Warm - Without Forcing It. Stay on their radar by engaging with their work and reaching out when you have a genuine reason to reconnect.
6. Always Create a Next Step. If you had a great conversation, suggest a coffee, call or another reason to continue the relationship.
Remember: networking isn't about how many people you meet - it's about how many genuine relationships you continue building afterwards.
Founder at Hireable
Read a Hireable founder's take on why building genuine relationships beats simply collecting connections.
One thing I've learnt from building Hireable is that networking works much better when you stop treating it as collecting connections and start treating it as building genuine relationships.
Some of the most valuable conversations I've had have started simply because I was curious about what someone was working on. You don't always need to approach someone wanting a job, favour or opportunity - ask good questions, take an interest in their work and stay in touch. The opportunities often come later as a result of the relationship.
Find yourself a mentor, believe you are worthy of support (because you are) and the most important one of all — believe in yourself absolutely!
A standout networking story from Mike Soutar
Years ago, I agreed at the last minute to attend an event because my boss had been called away. I was reluctant to go, knew nobody and felt completely out of my depth. After standing awkwardly watching everyone else socialise, I finally plucked up the courage to introduce myself to Gordon, the MD of Kiss FM.
We chatted, exchanged details and subsequently met for lunch. The bill arrived and he went to pay it, but I noticed we had been charged for dishes we hadn't ordered.
A week later, Gordon called to say he was moving to a bigger role and needed to replace himself. He joked that anyone so eagle-eyed about the cost of a business lunch might make a good MD.
Within two months of nervously introducing myself, I had been offered my first managing directorship.
So maybe "networking" isn't the popular image of someone confidently working a room.
Maybe sometimes if you can just find the courage within you to take that first step across it to say hello and be yourself, the universe will take care of the rest.

The Guide
Everything you need to know before your first networking event. Written for students who have never done it before.
Networking is simply having genuine conversations with people who work in fields you are interested in. The goal is not to impress anyone, collect business cards, or land a job in a single conversation. The goal is to build real relationships over time. It happens in formal settings like networking events, informal settings like university societies and work experience, and online through platforms like LinkedIn.
85% of jobs are filled through networking rather than job boards. 70% of professionals landed their current role through a personal connection. Nearly half of recent graduates wish they had received more networking training. Students who start building their professional network early arrive at graduation with relationships that open doors their peers have to spend months trying to find.
Tool 1 — Your 30-Second Introduction. Formula: Name + what you are studying or building + one thing you are genuinely curious about. Tool 2 — Three Questions That Work Anywhere: 'How did you get into your field?' · 'What does your day-to-day actually look like?' · 'What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?' Tool 3 — A LinkedIn Profile That Does Not Embarrass You. Tool 4 — The 24-Hour Follow-Up Message. Tool 5 — A Simple Contact Tracker.
Before: research the event, set a specific goal, prepare your introduction. When you arrive: find one person standing alone and introduce yourself — they are always relieved to have someone approach them. During: ask more questions than you answer, end conversations with 'Could I grab your LinkedIn?' After: send your 24-hour follow-up, fill in your contact tracker.
Connect with intention not volume. Personalise every message — never send the default connection request. Post once a week about something you are learning. Engage with content before reaching out — comment genuinely two or three times before sending a connection request. The relationship starts before you ever message them directly.
Introverts are often better networkers than extroverts because they listen more carefully, ask better questions, and build deeper relationships. Start online — LinkedIn gives you time to think before you respond. Do one-to-one rather than large groups. Prepare ten questions for any event so you never face an awkward silence. Give yourself permission to leave once you have hit your goal.
The Networking Mountain
Preparation. Attending. Talking. Follow Up. Most people stop at step three - the best networkers never do.
When you prepare yourself properly, your confidence grows. Confidence isn't just something some people have — it's built through how you prepare yourself. Research who will be there, set a goal, and practise your introduction before you arrive.
Show up on time — and dress for the situation. Arriving on time shows respect, and dressing to match the room means you feel like you belong in it.
Go in with the approach of "what can I learn?" rather than "what can I get?" The opportunities come later — genuine curiosity is what makes people want to help you.
Send your follow-up message 24–48 hours after the event and reference something specific they talked about. The small details matter — they're what make you memorable.
What Sets the Best Networkers Apart
Anyone can collect a contact. The people who build a network that actually opens doors are the ones who do the work after the event — the follow-up message, the check-in three months later, the genuine "I saw this and thought of you." Step 4 is where networking turns into relationships, and it is almost always the part most students skip. Don't be most students. The conversation only just begins once you've got their details.
Research, set a goal, practise your introduction.
Ask questions, listen well, grab LinkedIn.
24-hour message, update your contact tracker.
Free templates, checklists, and message guides.
